Does your horse lean on the forehand and pull the bit? Do you feel as though they are pulling your arms out? There is no way we can physically carry them around. Being heavy in the hand causes many difficult challenges in training from balance, to connection, to lateral work and even just having a comfortable ride. With these exercises I show how to use the body to lighten the hand and have self carriage.

Exercises for Lightening the Walk and Trot

Starting with the two rein yield from our Connection Reset Course, this video shows how to lighten a heavy horse off the hands using body balance and bending exercises in walk and trot. Our horses should be light in our hands and responsive to our seat and legs.

Exercises for Canter

In this canter video I start by showing an alternate rein hold that can be useful in disengaging the biceps. This rein hold helps prevent getting into a holding/bracing match that the rider will never win. Then I show different lightening exercises in the canter to keep the balance uphill and self carrying.
